House lawmakers press Paramount CEO on Warner Brothers acquisition

WASHINGTON, May 12 (Reuters) - Two key U.S. House Democrats ‌asked Paramount Skydance ‌CEO David Ellison on Tuesday to disclose if he or the company offered to make changes to CNN's coverage ‌of President Donald Trump in exchange for approval of a tie-up with Warner Brothers Discovery.

"It is clear that President Trump expects your potential ‌ownership of Warner to produce favorable press coverage for him and his allies," wrote Representatives Jamie Raskin and ‌Frank Pallone in a letter first reported by Reuters. "A merger ‌between Paramount Skydance and Warner would dangerously concentrate media power into a single conglomerate ‌and bring more independent voices under presidential influence."

Giant dinosaur-like bird issues 'death stare' to Uganda photographer

Last November we featured a bizarre video showing a dinosaur-like shoebill that had landed on a tour boat in Uganda.

USA TODAY

The striking imagery was captured in a manner that made the towering bird appear even larger, dwarfing the tourists.

Shoebill on tour boat last November.

Since then, shoebills in Uganda have gained significant popularity, maintaining icon status similar to that held by gorillas.

After all, shoebills are found only in East and Central Africa. There are perhaps fewer than 5,000 shoebills in the wild and they’re listed as vulnerable, with a shrinking population. Shoebill encounters, therefore, are considered rare.

But their appeal from a tourism standpoint transcends rarity. The shoebill’s size (up to 5 feet tall) and prehistoric appearance, including a deadly-sharp bill for hunting, add to the bird’s allure.

And those eyes….

This week, photographerJaz Abahoshared a stunning image that perfectly captures the essence of a shoebill stare-down. (See post below.)

Abaho’s description reads, in part: "What makes this image special for me is the patience behind it — waiting for that perfect close encounter. The legendary 'death stare' of the Shoebill is always the moment of the day."

Fortunately for tourists, shoebillsare not considered dangerous to humans. But with razor-sharp bills, they’re capable of decapitating baby crocodiles whilehunting for fish and reptiles.

Abaho’s encounter, like the tour-boat encounter during aUganda Shoebillexcursion, occurred in Mabamba Swamp on the shore of Lake Victoria.

Israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahusaid that theU.S.-Israeli war on Iran"is not over" in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" set to air on May 10.

USA TODAY

The prime minister alleged that Iran still has nuclear material that could be removed if "you go in, and you take it out," in anexcerpt of the interviewreleased by the show ahead of air.

Netanyahusaid that PresidentDonald Trumptold him that "I want to go in there" and refused to rule out the use of American forces to retrieve the nuclear material.

"I'm not (going to) talk about military means," Netanyahu said. "I think it can be done physically."

Netanyahu additionally said that military goals had not been entirely completed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leaves after a press conference in Jerusalem on March 19, 2026. Netanyahu said on March 19 that Israel and the US were

"There are still enrichment sites that have to be dismantled. There are still proxies that Iran supports. There are ballistic missiles that they still want to produce," Netanyahu said. "Now, we've degraded a lot of it, but all that is still there, and there's work to be done."

USA TODAY has reached out to the White House for comment on the interview.

The interview comes on the same day thatIran responded to a U.S. proposalto end the war, according toIranian state media. Details of that response have not been released.

"We will never bow our heads before the enemy, and if talk of dialogue or negotiation arises, it does not mean surrender or retreat," Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian saidin a post on Xon May 10. "Rather, the goal is to uphold the rights of the Iranian nation and to defend national interests with resolute strength."

U.S. Energy Secretary Christopher Wright said the Trump administration hadn’t yet heard "a clear resolution" from Iran during a May 10 appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press."

The interview also comes assupport for Israel in the U.S. is at historic lows.

A Pew Research Center surveypublished April 7found that 60% of all American adults had an unfavorable opinion of Israel, compared with 53% a year earlier and a 20-point shift since 2022. Just 37% of respondents had a favorable view of Israel.

The war has fueled Americans' suspicions that Israel, and particularly Netanyahu, dragged the United States into a protracted conflict in the Middle East. Notably, former Trump ally and conservative commentator Tucker Carlsonrepeatedly called Trump a "slave"to Israel and Netanyahu in interviews.
