Sean Strickland hands Khamzat Chimaev first loss, reclaims belt

Khamzat Chimaev's first UFC middleweight title defense surprisingly marked a changing of the guard, as Sean Strickland ruined his plans by becoming a two-time UFC middleweight champion at UFC 328 in Newark, N.J., on Saturday.

Strickland's (31-7 MMA) split decision victory -- 47-48, 48-47, 48-47 -- handed Chimaev (15-1 MMA) his first loss as both men embraced after a four-day buildup peppered with a ton of animosity.

"He's a ... savage," Strickland, 35, said of Chimaev afterward as he apologized for pre-fight rancor. "I'm hitting him with everything, and he just keeps coming forward. Crazy."

After a dominant opening round from the incumbent which nearly saw Chimaev secure a rear-naked choke, a stuffed Chimaev takedown in the second led to Strickland being in side-control, landing strikes from the top position -- a sequence rarely seen in Chimaev's career to that point.

In Round 3, both men kept the fight standing as Strickland found a home for the jab. Chimaev ignored obscenity-filled jeering from spectators at Prudential Center as he attempted to remain focused.

By Round 4, Chimaev used a much more tentative approach on the feet as Strickland's nose was visibly bloody and compromised. A late takedown from Chimaev, a Russian who fights out of the United Arab Emirates, gave him his third in his last five attempts, albeit briefly, as the round ended.

With five minutes remaining, Chimaev kept Strickland against the fence in the clinch as Strickland eventually broke free back to the center of the octagon. Chimaev ended the fight with nine takedowns, but Strickland held a sizable 123-98 edge in significant strikes.

The American had won the 185-pound title in September 2023 with an upset of Nigeria's Israel Adesanya by unanimous decision.

The co-main event saw UFC flyweight champion Joshua Van (17-2 MMA) of Myanmar successfully defend his title for the first time, securing a TKO win against Japan's Tatsuro Taira 1:32 into the fifth and final round.

The fight encountered many twists and turns. As Taira (18-2 MMA) kept getting takedowns and the mount position, Van's jab and a near rear-naked choke attempt in Round 3 were the perfect counter to a potential Fight of the Year candidate that many pundits had 2-2 entering the final round.

Van had a few choice words for Alexandre Pantoja, from whom he took the title in December when Pantoja dislocated his elbow after a bad fall, resulting in a TKO via an unexpected finish to their UFC 323 fight. Pantoja had a front-row seat to the action in Newark, N.J.

"We can run it back if you want," Van said to Pantoja during his post-fight interview.

Taira had never been finished in his previous 19 fights, only losing a decision to Brandon Royval in October 2024 at UFC Vegas 98.

In the featured heavyweight main card bout, second-ranked Alexander Volkov of Russia outlasted fourth-ranked Waldo Cortes-Acosta of the Dominican Republic, earning a unanimous decision win 30-27, 29-28, 29-28. Although it wasn't a dynamic TKO from Volkov (40-11 MMA) that he's primarily used to, volume striking made the difference.

Cortes-Acosta (17-3 MMA) had a three-fight winning streak snapped. The entire division remains at a standstill until Tom Aspinall returns to full health from his eye injury and the interim title fight between Alex Pereira and Cyril Gane at UFC Freedom 250. After that, what's next for Volkov can be determined.

UFC welterweight Sean Brady overwhelmed Joaquin Buckley with ground strikes from the mount position across four takedowns, 12:09 of ground control time, and several submission attempts, winning a dominant unanimous decision -- 30-25, 30-25, 30-27.

Brady (19-2 MMA) bounced back, having now won four of his last five, with his only loss coming to Michael Morales in that span. Buckley (21-8 MMA) has done the opposite, taking back-to-back losses. Buckley is still seeking his first win since December 2024, landing only 21 strikes throughout the 15-minute contest against 245 from Brady.

King Green kicked off the UFC 328 main card emphatically with a first-round rear-naked choke (4:20) submission over fellow UFC veteran Jeremy Stephens at lightweight -- even though Stephens came in four pounds overweight -- in a one-sided affair. Green (35-17-1 MMA) picked up his 16th UFC win, extending his winning streak to three.

Meanwhile, Stephens (29-23 MMA) is in his second stint with the promotion, having competed on and off overall since 2007, and is still searching for his first UFC win since February 2018.

WASHINGTON, May 11 (Reuters) - Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is not going to Beijing ‌during President Donald Trump's trip to China ‌this week, a person familiar with the matter said on Monday.

Huang was not invited, the source said, with the White House focusing more on agriculture and commercial aviation matters, such as orders for Boeing planes, on the ‌current trip. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A number of CEOs were expected to travel with Trump to help drum up business for U.S. companies, a top priority for his administration.

A person familiar with the matter confirmed last ‌week that Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser was invited. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon will attend as long as the trip goes ahead as planned, another source with knowledge of the matter said last week.

Trump has ‌developed a strong relationship with Huang since he has been in office and agreed to allow the company's H200 AI ‌chips to be exported to China. But they have not yet been sold, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on April 22nd, citing difficulties with Chinese companies ‌getting permission to buy them from the Chinese government.

Panthers reportedly release defender on Thursday

TheCarolina Panthershave reportedly parted ways with a defender ahead of this weekend's rookie minicamp.

USA TODAY

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, the team isreleasinglinebacker Jacoby Windmon. The 24-year-old has spent parts of the last two seasons with Carolina.

The Marrero, La. native and Michigan State University product cracked into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024. He'd be signed off their practice squad by the Panthers later that year, in mid-October.

Windmon would return to Pittsburgh after being waived by Carolina in the summer of 2025. He then headed back to the Panthers a few months later in November, and signed a reserve/future contract following the 2025 campaign.

In his pair of seasons with the Panthers, Windmon recorded 22 combined tackles, a sack and a half and two passes defensed over nine games. He also made two starts as a rookie in 2024.

3 biggest takeaways for Sixers following Game 3 loss to Knicks at home

PHILADELPHIA -- ThePhiladelphia 76ersare facing elimination as theyfell to the New York Knicks 108-94as they now trail the series 3-0. They are in a position that nobody wants to be in as there has been no instance of a team rallying to win a series after trailing 3-0 in NBA history. The Sixers will now have to dig deep in order to avoid elimination on Sunday afternoon.

USA TODAY

The Sixers were led by Kelly Oubre Jr. with 22 points and eight rebounds, Joel Embiid had 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists, and Tyrese Maxey had 17 points and seven assists. Paul George had 15 points and five rebounds while VJ Edgecombe added 11 and seven rebounds.

Here are the three biggest takeaways following the loss:

Bench scoring an issue

The Knicks received a big spark from their second unit all night long as former Sixer Landry Shamet hopped off the bench and scored 15 points for them. Mitchell Robinson had six points and Jordan Clarkson had four while Jose Alvarado had three points. Total that up and New York received 28 bench points. The Sixers did not score a single bench point until the 11:00 mark of the fourth quarter when Quentin Grimes drilled a 3-pointer. The Sixers have to find a way to get some type of scoring from the bench unit as this series moves forward.

Coach Nick Nurse stated on the bench unit:

"Just trying to find the right combinations of who stays and who comes in, and try to make sure we generate some makeable shots and things like that. I think it kind of started a little bit at the end of the first there, where we made some subs, and we didn't hold the water very good there going at the end of the first, and then again at the start of the fourth. We kind of got ourselves right back in the game At the start of the fourth, (Jalen) Brunson was having a good game. So, we decided to blitz him a little bit, and they scored, I think, on three straight blitzes."

George starts fast, but can't sustain

This has been a theme in this series as George has started games hot, but then has tailed off as the game wears on. The 9-time All-Star was fantastic in the first quarter as he scored 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting. He then went scoreless the rest of the night on 0-for-9 shooting and didn't take a single free throw attempt. Obviously, George can't control whether he gets calls or not. That's on the officiating, but it is so important for the Sixers to keep George involved and keep him in rhythm. He is essential to everything the Sixers want to do.

"I think there's probably a couple mixed in there that are tough (shots), but he's also made a lot of those tough ones early in the game, too," said Nurse. "I think he did have a couple tough looks there as the game went on, but I thought he also had a couple decent looks. I mean, I got to look at it. Just got to get him in in some better situations, I think the post-ups and stuff we've done, he's gotten some good looks and made those. He did have a couple more of those as the game went on, and just didn't go in. Just gotta keep getting him in the ball in some places where he likes it."

A quiet Maxey night

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - MAY 08: Tyrese Maxey #0 of the Philadelphia 76ers dribbles the ball against Miles McBride #2 of the New York Knicks during the second quarter in Game Three of the Second Round of the NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs at Xfinity Mobile Arena on May 08, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Sixers received 17 points from Maxey, but he only took 12 shots. Now, he did make eight of those shots, but he was also only 1-for-3 from deep. The Knicks deserve credit for their aggressive blitzing as Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, and Miles McBride all bothered Maxey a bit when he crossed halfcourt to force him to give it up. Guys like Clarkson and Shamet bothered the 2-time All-Star as well. It was one of those nights where the Sixers have to find ways to make life easier for Maxey as they move forward.

"Just be available," said Embiid. "Everybody has to be. You know? I feel like every single time we blitzed Brunson. They made us pay. It comes down to shot-making. I feel like we had a lot of good shots tonight. They made theirs and we didn't make ours. Just more available, and just go from there."
