Judge rules against Shilo Sanders, son of Colorado coach Deion Sanders, in bankruptcy lawsuit

A judge in a bankruptcy lawsuit filed against former Colorado football player Shilo Sandersdenied Sanders' request to dismiss a complaintalleging he violated bankruptcy law, according to USA Today.

The complaint is related to an incident in 2015, in which Sanders reportedly assaulted a security guard at Sanders' high school. That security guard, John Darjean, claimed he was left with permanent injuries from the assault, including "neurological injuries and damage to his cervical spine," per USA Today.

Darjean sued both Sanders — who was 15 years old at the time — and his parents, former NFL star Deion Sanders and wife Pilar, following the incident. Deion and Pilar were eventually dropped from the lawsuit before it went to trial in 2022.

Shilo, however, did not show up to the trial, resulting in the court entering adefault judgment against him for nearly $12 million. Shilofiled for bankruptcythe following year as a way to get out of that debt.

As a result, a trustee — David Wadsworth — was assigned to Sanders to manage his assets. Wadsworth, however, filed a complaint against Sanders last October alleging Sanders "violated bankruptcy law bymaking unauthorized transfersof approximately $250,000," per USA Today. Sanders filed to have thatsuit dismissedin November.

But the suit filed by Wadsworth will be allowed to continue following Judge Michael Romero's ruling Wednesday, per USA Today.

In his complaint, Wadsworth alleged that the $250,000 in earnings that Sanders transferred should have been put into the bankruptcy estate, and not given to Sanders. Romero ruled that Wadsworth's argument was sound enough to allow the case to continue.

In bankruptcy cases, earnings filed before declaring bankruptcy are generally put into the bankruptcy estate. Earnings made after filing for bankruptcy typically belong to the person who filed for bankruptcy.

Wadsworth argued that some of the money Sanders made from NIL or from his businesses deserve to go into the bankruptcy estate. Romero said Wadsworth "supported his claims with sufficient factual allegations," which is why the complaint was allowed to proceed.

All of that, however, could be completely upended in August. On Tuesday, Romero set an Aug. 31 trial date to determine whether Sanders inflicted "willful and malicious" injuries to Darjean in 2015. If it is determined that Sanders did intend to hurt Darjean, his debt and bankruptcy filing will remain valid. If not, Sanders would be able to discharge the debt andget out of the bankruptcy process, per USA Today. That August ruling would presumably affect Wadsworth's complaint against Sanders.

Following his time at Colorado, Sanders went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. He hooked on with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent, but did not make the final 53-man roster.

Inter Miami visits White House: Will Messi attend? Here's what we know

MLS Cup champions Inter Miami will visit PresidentDonald Trumpat the White House on Thursday, March 5 to commemorate their 2025 title.

USA TODAY Sports

Although it has not yet been confirmed by the club, Lionel Messi – the two-time MLS MVP, eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and Argentine World Cup champion – could attend the ceremony, along with co-owner and former soccer star David Beckham.

Inter Miami is taking part in what has become a customary event for professional and college sports champions in the United States to be congratulated by the president.

The ceremony is expected to begin around 4 p.m. ET in the East Room of the White House.

Inter Miami traveled to Washington D.C. on Thursday morning – two days before a match against D.C. United in Baltimore on Saturday, March 7 ahead of the visit.

"We are going because we are champions from last season," Inter Miami midfielder Telasco Segovia said earlier this week. "I don't get involved with politics, but I know it's an important occasion."

Inter Miami takes off for White House trip

Inter Miami departed from South Florida early Thursday, sharing social media posts – which did not include Messi in the photos.

Has Messi visited the White House before?

Not yet – this would be Messi's first visit to the White House.

Messi wasawarded the Presidential Medal of FreedomfromPresident Joe Bidenin January 2025, but he did not attend the ceremony due to a scheduling issue during Inter Miami's offseason.

What does Messi's visit mean for World Cup?

If Messi visits the White House, Trump will have met two of soccer's greatest players in the past five months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Soccer's all-time leading goal scorerCristiano Ronaldo attended a black-tie dinnerat the White House when Trump hosted Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman last November.

Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino have become good friends in the past few years, highlighted by several White House visits. Infantino also awarded Trump with FIFA's Peace Prize during the World Cup draw in December.

Messi, who plays for reigning World Cup champion Argentina, has yet to declare he will play in the tournament. But it's a safe bet he will.

Why is the visit to the White House controversial?

The United States and Israel beganstrikes on Iran early on Saturday, Feb. 28, in a campaign thatkilled the nation's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameneiand several top officials, among others. Iran is a participating nation in the World Cup, though Trump recently said"I really don't care"if the country takes part in the tournament.

Also in late February, Trump invited the U.S. men's and women's hockey teams after both winning gold medals at theMilan Cortina Olympics. However, Trump made what was seen as a sexist remark on a phone call with the men's team after their win, joking that he would also have toinvite the women's team to the White House. Whilethe men's team visited, the women's team declined their invitation.

Trump's widespread immigration crackdown with U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) is also an ongoing controversy.ICE officials could be present at World Cup games this summer, acting director Todd Lyons said last month.

Have MLS Cup-winning teams visited the White House before?

Inter Miami will be the first MLS Cup winner to visit the White House during either of Trump's presidencies.

David Beckham, an Inter Miami co-owner, attended a White House ceremony with the LA Galaxy in 2012 after winning the 2011 MLS Cup. The Galaxy also visited for titles won in 2012 and 2014 with President Barack Obama. Obama also welcomed the Columbus Crew (2008), Real Salt Lake (2009), Colorado Rapids (2010) and Sporting Kansas City (2013) to the White House.

The last MLS club to visit the White House was the Columbus Crew, who visited Biden in 2024 to celebrate their 2023 title.

D.C. United was the first MLS winner to visit the White House in 1998 when President Bill Clinton was in office.

How did Messi, Inter Miami win MLS Cup?

Inter Miami beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 towin the 2025 MLS Cupon Dec. 6, 2025.

When is Messi's next game?

As Iran conflict rages, Pope Leo asks God to help leaders renounce war

By Joshua McElwee

VATICAN CITY, March 5 (Reuters) - Pope Leo released a video on Thursday praying that God would help world ‌leaders renounce war as a means of resolving conflicts in ‌an unusual appeal as the U.S.-Israeli bombing campaign against Iran pressed on for the sixth day.

"Lord, enlighten the leaders of the nations, so they may have the courage to abandon projects of death," the pontiff said in the video message.

"Today we lift up our prayer for peace in the world, ‌asking that nations renounce weapons and choose the path of dialogue and diplomacy," he said.

Leo releases a video message each month to announce his prayer intentions for that month. The pope's intention for March is "for disarmament and peace".

It was unclear if Thursday's video was created specifically to respond to the U.S.-Israeli military campaign, which has set off a regional ‌war with Iranian attacks in Israel, the Gulf and Iraq, and Israeli attacks in Lebanon.

The Vatican did not immediately respond to a question about when the video was recorded.

The Vatican's top diplomat warned on Wednesday that the U.S.-Israeli strikes undermined international law and said nations did ‌not have a right to launch "preventive wars", an unusually direct criticism of the military campaign.

"If states were to be recognised as having a right to 'preventive war' ... the ‌entire world could risk going up in flames," Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's secretary of state, said in an interview with Vatican News.

In his video, the pope asked God to help the world ‌understand "that true security does not come from control fuelled by fear but from trust, justice and solidarity among peoples."

Trae Young eager to make impact in Wizards' debut vs. Jazz

Trae Young plans to make his long-awaited debut for the Washington Wizards when they host the Utah Jazz on Thursday night.

Field Level Media

Young made the announcement in a video posted to his Instagram account on Monday. He has not played for the Wizards since they acquired him in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks on Jan. 9.

The four-time NBA All-Star has been limited to just 10 games this season while dealing with knee and quad injuries. He's averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 assists per game and should offer an instant boost to Washington's offense.

Young will be on a minutes restriction against Utah, with the current plan being for him to play 17 to 20 minutes.

He already has made his presence known to his teammates after getting ejected during the Wizards' 123-118 loss to Houston on Monday. Young left the bench and walked onto the court to protest a no-call after Jamir Watkins got shoved by Houston's Tari Eason.

"Don't expect me to get ejected too many more times D.C.," Young said in a post to his X account. "But I'm definitely bringing that energy and competitiveness when I'm back for my brothers!"

Even while on the sidelines, Young has tried to play an active role in helping his team become better.

Washington ran its losing streak to six games following Tuesday's 126-109 setback to Orlando. But his efforts to coach up teammates from the bench and give them feedback have not gone unnoticed.

"He's talking to everybody in every timeout," Wizards coach Brian Keefe told The Athletic. "He sees so much. He has so much stuff to share. He's completely engaged in the whole game. So, I am not surprised that he stood up (for) his teammates. That's the type of guy he is, and we're lucky to have him."

Amid its own slump, Utah also has shown a competitive fire.

The Jazz have dropped seven straight games after losing 106-102 to Philadelphia on Wednesday night. Still, they have strung together numerous hard-fought contests going down to the wire in that stretch.

A 128-125 setback to the Denver Nuggets on Monday serves as a prime example.

Utah pushed the Nuggets for four quarters and actually took a 122-118 lead with 2:13 left after scoring on nine straight possessions. Keyonte George, who finished with 36 points, keyed the surge with four consecutive baskets and finished it off with a dunk off a steal.

George followed it up by leading Utah with 30 points against the 76ers on Wednesday. He made back-to-back 3-pointers to help the Jazz build a 100-94 lead with 4:51 left before Philadelphia closed the game on a 12-2 run.

Even with the postseason far out of reach, Utah is playing like a team that isn't thinking ahead to offseason vacation plans.

"We can play mind games a little bit," George told the Deseret News on Monday. "Try to trick ourselves into thinking that these last few games we're trying to find our rhythm as a team maybe going into the postseason."

Malaysia loses appeal against FIFA in case of fake documents to recruit foreign players

GENEVA (AP) — The Malaysian Football Association lost its appeal on Thursday against aFIFA ruling it cheatedby using false documents to naturalize foreign-born players for the men's national team.

Associated Press

TheCourt of Arbitration for Sport saidits judges confirmed a 350,000 Swiss francs ($450,000) fine for the FA and one-year bans for the seven players "given their complicit responsibility in this fraud."

The players were given Malaysian passports and selected for the team's 4-0 win over Vietnam last June in a qualifying game for the 2027 Asian Cup. That win should be overturned by the Asian Football Confederation.

"The CAS panel found that the infraction of falsifying eligibility documents was established and that the 12-month ban from playing matches was a reasonable and proportionate sanction for the players," the court said.

However, the court relaxed the FIFA punishments by ruling the players should be allowed to train and take part in soccer activities outside of games until their bans expire.

The Malaysia FA acknowledged its "institutional shortcomings," the court said, "and did not dispute that it may bear responsibility in violating" FIFA disciplinary rules.

"It also stated that the players had a limited role in providing documents requested by (the federation) and did not prepare, nor alter them," CAS said.

The faked recruits

The banned players were Gabriel Felipe Arrocha, Jon Irazábal Iraurgui, Facundo Tomás Garcés, Rodrigo Julián Holgado, Imanol Javier Machuca, João Vitor Brandão Figueiredo and Hector Alejandro Hevel Serrano.

They were chosen to help a Malaysia teamcurrently No. 121in the FIFA ranking of 211 men's national teams. Malaysia has never qualified for a World Cup and at the 2023 Asian Cup placed last in its group without a win in three games.

FIFA originally processed applications for the players to change their national eligibility to Malaysia, by accepting documents claiming grandparents of the seven players were born there. That detail, if true, would have complied with FIFA's nationality rules.

FIFA's own investigation later showed the family members were born in the same countries as the players: Argentina, Brazil, the Netherlands and Spain.

Soccer's eligibility problem

It is the latest case of false registrations in international soccer — often involving players from Brazil — seeking to exploitFIFA rules which do allowsome foreign-born players to change their eligibility.

East Timor was expelledfrom the 2023 Asian Cup for selecting players with fake birth certificates in World Cup qualifying games.Equatorial Guinea's men's and women's teamswere caught in qualifying games for tournaments including the 2012 London Olympics and men's 2014 World Cup.
