Is it too early to panic about the Boston Red Sox?

We're less than two weeks into the 2026 MLB season, but that doesn't change the fact that some teams are off to promising starts, while others are decidedly not.

Yahoo Sports

As discussed on the latest episode of "Baseball Bar-B-Cast," perhaps the team in the worst position so far this season is the Boston Red Sox.

The Sox are 1-5 and 4.0games back of the Yankees in the AL East, the largest deficit in any division entering play Friday. They were swept by the Astros this week and have lost five in a row since winning on Opening Day.

"This is the team that is objectively in the worst position of any team in the sport right now," Jordan Shusterman said. "It's not just that the Red Sox have lost these games … We're already in the place where it's, 'Oh, boy, this doesn't look great.'"

As Shusterman noted, the team's offseason acquisitions, notably Caleb Durbin, Ranger Suarez, Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, have not played well through the first six games. Also, Carlos Narváez was benched for an unknown reason, Trevor Story is 4-for-29 to begin the season and Roman Anthony struck out four times on Tuesday.

"As far as five-game losing streaks go, they're packing in a lot of things that are pissing off their own fans," Shusterman said.

Added Jake Mintz: "If you said to the Red Sox, you're going to win on Opening Day, and then over the next five games, we need you to make people as concerned as possible without a debilitating injury … the Red Sox said, 'Yeah, we got this.'"

As the hosts noted, it is silly to be panicking about any baseball team because it is the beginning of April. However, the AL East is not a division in which a contender can afford to fall behind early. Case in point:Boston's playoff odds at FanGraphsdropped from around 60% to around 40% in one week, as Shusterman noted.

"I am not that concerned about the Red Sox," Mintz said, "but at the same time, given the way that this team has operated in previous seasons, I think it is reasonable for fans to be frustrated."

The Red Sox begin their first homestand of the season on Friday, with three games against the Padres followed by three games against the Brewers.

According tothe FDA announcement, Raw Farm is issuing the voluntary recall "under protest," and the company continues to contest the FDA's epidemiological evidence linking its raw Cheddar cheese to the E. coli outbreak. However, it is still recalling several varieties of Cheddar cheese that were made from milk that is not pasteurized or thermalized "as a path forward."

How To Identify the Recalled Cheddar Cheese

Whilethe FDA previously issued an advisoryinstructing customers not to consume, sell, or serve any of the block and shredded Cheddar cheeses produced by Raw Farm after Jan. 4, 2026, we now have a list of exact batches and cheeses subject to recall. What To Do if You Have the Recalled Cheddar Cheese

Consumers are urged not to consume any of the batches of Cheddar cheese included in this voluntary recall. Instead, return the products to the original place of purchase for a full refund.

As of March 26, 2026, the FDA investigation is still ongoing. So far, nine cases of E. coli in three states—California, Florida, and Texas—have been reported, three of which required hospitalization, and one of which resulted in hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition that can cause kidney failure.

If you consumed the Raw Farm raw Cheddar cheeses, you should monitor yourself for symptoms of E. coli, which can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. If you are experiencing any symptoms of an E. coli infection, contact a healthcare provider immediately. If you have questions regarding the recall, you can contact Raw Farm via this form:https://rawfarmusa.com/contact.

Pope Leo XIV to carry cross for entire procession, the first pontiff to do so in decades

ROME (AP) —Pope Leo XIVwill personally carry the wooden cross through all 14 stations of the Way of the Cross at the Colosseum on his firstGood Fridayas pontiff, marking the first time in decades that a pope carries the cross to every station.

Vatican Pope Good Friday

"I think it will be an important sign because of what the pope represents, a spiritual leader in the world today, and for this voice, that everyone wants to hear, that says Christ still suffers," Leo told reporters this week outside of the papal retreat at Castel Gandolfo. "I carry all of this suffering in my prayer."

John Paul II carried the cross for the entire procession from his first Good Friday as pontiff in 1979 until his hip surgery in 1995, when he carried it just part of the way, according to AP reports at the time.

For the first two years of his papacy,Benedict XVIcarried the cross for the first station inside the Colosseum, then followed other bearers in the procession that ends on a platform on the Palatine Hill.

Pope Francisnever carried the cross, but participated in the procession until his health worsened. He died after a long illness last year on Easter Monday, which fell on April 21.

Pope John Paul II was just 58 when he became pope, and was known as a hiker and outdoorsman. His two successors were in their late 70s when they began their papacies, and Francis was missing part of a lung due to a pulmonary infection as a young man.

At 70, Leo is physically fit and an avid tennis player and swimmer. Before becoming pope, Leo wouldwork out regularlyat a gym near the Vatican, with a plan befitting a man in his early 50s, according to his former trainer.

Crowds are expected to gather outside of the Colosseum for the Way of the Cross, which commemorates the final hours of Jesus' life, from his death sentence to taking up the cross to his crucifixion, death and burial. The procession ends outside the Colosseum atop the Palatine Hill.

The meditations, which are read aloud at each station, were composed by the Rev. Francesco Patton, who was custos (or custodian) of the Holy Land 2016-25, charged, among other things, with looking after sacred sites

"The Way of the Cross is not intended for those who lead a pristinely pious or abstractly recollected life," Patton wrote in his introduction. "Instead, it is the exercise of one who knows that faith, hope and charity must be incarnated in the real world."

On Holy Saturday, the pontiff will preside over Easter vigil rites at St. Peter's Square and lead Roman Catholics into Christianity's most joyous celebration marking Christ's resurrection.

On Easter Sunday, the pope will celebrate an open-air Mass in St. Peter's Square before delivering his Easter message and offer the traditional "Urbi et Orbi" blessing to the city (of Rome) and the world.

Second Winter Storm Will Bring Snow, Ice To Northern US As April Kicks Off

A second winter storm will blanket parts of the northern U.S. with snow and ice through the weekend from the northern Rockies to the Great Lakes and parts of northern New England as a reminder that April can still deliver wintry weather for some.

The Weather Channel

Fortunately, neither of these back-to-back winter storms will come anywhere close to the ferocity oflast month's record-setting blizzard. But each will still have impacts on travel into the Easter holiday weekend.

The storms have been named Winter Storm Joseline and Winter Storm Kadence by The Weather Channel.

(MORE:March Had Everything But The Kitchen Sink)

Happening Now

The map below shows where areas of snow, sleet and freezing rain are occurring right now.

Most of Joseline's snow and ice has pushed into eastern Canada, but some wintry precipitation is lingering in parts of northern Minnesota and northern New England.

Joseline blanketed parts of the Dakotas and northern Minnesota with up to 8 inches of snow. It also left one-quarter one half-inch of accumulated ice in parts of northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan, which, combined with strong winds, knocked out power to over 50,000 customers.

The second winter storm, Kadence, is spreading its snow and some ice out of the northern Rockies into the Northern Plains.

Winter Alerts

Winter storm warnings, and even an ice storm warning, have been issued for parts of the upper Midwest just hammered by last month's blizzard, including parts of Minnesota into northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Conditions in these areas will make it dangerous to travel.

Forecast Timeline

Friday, the first winter storm will have spread most of its snowy, icy mess into eastern Canada. However, some snow, sleet or freezing rain is expected in parts of northern New England early, before precipitation changes to rain.

Meanwhile, the second winter storm — Kadence — will take shape over the Northern Plains with more snow and ice. Friday night, that wintry mess will once again spread into the northern Great Lakes.

Winter Storm Kadence will persist in the northern Great Lakes with snow and some areas of ice, though some warmer air could change some areas of freezing rain to rain by midday.

Some freezing rain could once again also spread into parts of far northern New England late Saturday night, but it may change to rain by Easter Sunday.

How Much More Snow, Ice?

As we alluded to earlier, despite being two storms back-to-back, neither storm will produce anywhere near the totals of the blizzard in mid-March.

However, we do expect a swath of 6-inch-plus additional snowfall across parts of the Dakotas into northern Minnesota and perhaps extreme northwest Wisconsin. Extreme northern Maine could see snowfall approach 6 inches, as well.

This could make travel difficult on stretches of Interstates 94, 29, 35 and 90. Leave yourself extra time and be prepared in case any stretches of roads close for a period of time. The combination of wet snow and winds may also lead to some power outages and tree damage in some areas.

The map below shows areas that may see enough ice accumulation to make most roads slippery, for a time, particularly bridges and overpasses.

The combination of accumulating ice and winds may also lead to some tree damage and power outages in these areas, especially areas that see freezing rain from both storms.

What complicates this forecast, however, is that precipitation in the areas below may eventually change to rain, and ground temperatures are warmer due to the recent bout of spring warmth.

For now, the highest concern for accumulating ice in the Great Lakes is early Saturday.

In far northern New England, that icing concern is early Friday, then possibly again early Sunday.

April Snow

You might be wondering how weird snow as late as April is.

The short answer is, "it's typical."

As you can see in the map below, the season's last snow typically happens in April across most of the northern tier, from northern New England to the Northern Plains.

In parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the Rockies, snow usually still falls in May.
