In 2020, Candice Carty-Williams turned the first Black author to win Book of the Year at the British Ebook Awards. This yr, she's bringing her profitable novel Queenie — originally marketed because the "Black Bridget Jones" — to Hulu.

The collection is a part of a slate of TV from Disney's Onyx Collective, which seeks to elevate creators of shade and underrepresented voices. It follows its titular character (Dionne Brown) as she experiences a messy breakup and messier rebounds.

What's Queenie about?

Queenie is a 25-year-old Jamaican British lady dwelling in South London. After she and her boyfriend of three years part ways, she finds herself re-evaluating her decisions — a process that leads to some unlucky hookups. However amid the chaos of her love life, Queenie also begins to confront trauma from her past to face her internal demons and rebuild.

Singer Bellah, who stars as Queenie's good friend Kyazike, praised Queenie's imperfections at the Tv Critics Affiliation (TCA) press tour.

"I feel it is superb to have tales where Black ladies do not have it all together, where they don't have to seem robust and found out," she stated. "It is nice to navigate mistakes… I feel this is, for Black ladies, a universal story."

With the help of the novel's distinct voice, materializing here in voice-over, Queenie candidly explores what it's wish to be younger and making an attempt to determine yourself out. For Brown, that voice-over proved key in how Queenie tackles themes resembling generational trauma.

"She's not processing her trauma, so we start to see what occurs once you stuff that in a drawer and do not clear it out in her voiceover," Brown explained.

Candice Carty-Williams adapts her own novel to the display.

Carty-Williams will serve as Queenie's showrunner and government producer. "It was extremely necessary to me that I be concerned from the beginning to the top," Carty-Williams stated of her work on the show.

In the course of the writing process, she related with Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, whose recommendation of "write what you need to write" she took to coronary heart.

"There aren't a whole lot of Black female authors within the UK who have executed this, so I needed to go to a white man for help," Carty-Williams joked of her dialogue with Armstrong.

Queenie's forged is made up of a number of rising stars, together with Brown (Legal Report) as Queenie, Bellah in her debut position as Kyazike, and Samuel Adewunmi (Secret Invasion) as Queenie's good friend Frank.

All eight episodes of Queenie premiere on June 7 on Hulu.
